Question: aside from AT&T network charges, how much does an 8GB iPhone cost? If you answered US$599, you would be about US$115 short of the mark if we accept the fact that the iPhone's non-removable battery is only good for about one year.

Sony President Ryoji Chubachi may well have broadcast to the media that Sony will not cut the price of the PS3 but let's face facts - it's bluster. Sony will cut the price of PS3 by at least US$100 in time for the Christmas shopping season - but not to compete with Nintendo's Wii. On price, Wii will be a winner every time.

OK I admit it. I was wrong about the Wii. We now have a Wii in our home (a present from a colleague) and it's a very cool console. However, even though Wii is slaughtering PS3 at the checkout counters and, despite all of its problems, including the high price and a lack of games, nearly 4 million PS3 consoles have still sold worldwide and its secret weapon is about to come into its own.

It's no longer any secret that Blu-ray has taken a clear lead at the point of sale over its rival HD DVD high definition video format. No matter how you spin it, Blockbuster and Nielsen VideoScan report more Blu-ray than HD DVD discs being rented and sold. Sales and rentals are largely a factor of two things: high definition player sales and movie studio support. The latter is where things get murky, why the war is still not over and why the EU has entered the fight.

News that hackers are out in force in an effort to "free" the iPhone hardware from the constraints on its use imposed by the activation process and the exclusivity of its carrier deal with AT&T are instructive. The biggest issue appears to be that despite paying US$600 iPhone owners will never actually own "the best iPod ever built."

Lately, Universal Music Group has displayed a penchant for flexing its muscles by taking on some of the world's most powerful media players. First it was Google's YouTube over alleged copyright infringement, then it was News Corp's MySpace, and now it is Apple iTunes. The fact is UMG is probably all bluff.

Now that the iPhone is out in the hands of real reviewers rather than the selected Apple friendlies who got previews prior to release, the real story is emerging. The gist of it is that Apple's new baby is a ripper of a multi-function device but if you're looking for a good high-end mobile phone don't buy an iPhone.

It may come as a shock to adoring Michael Moore fans but not everyone agrees with him or the ways he expresses his views through the medium of film making. Thus, when Google blogger Lauren Turner, who sells Google advertising to the healthcare industry, expressed relatively mild and veiled criticism of Moore's new film Sicko in a company blog and suggested ways her clients could combat negative publicity through advertising, outrage ensued.

It’s a testimony to the drawing power of the iPhone and marketing prowess of Apple that consumers are prepared to overlook the fact that it’s only available in the US on an obsolete Edge network. That may be good enough for US consumers but it probably won’t wash in Europe, much of Asia and here in Australia.

Unlike a few privileged reviewers, I haven't had a chance to thoroughly test Apple's new wonder gadget but I have held one in my hands and played with it for a few minutes. It's a beautiful piece of engineering and it will sell well, but only in a limited market space.

If you happen to be an American child of the ruling class then chances are you have or are aspiring to have a Facebook account; if you're a working class child then Myspace is probably your online social network of choice. At least that's what PhD candidate Danah Boyd contends in an essay on her website.

With the announcement that Blockbuster has decided to give HD DVD the flick from shelves of 1450 stores after an initial trial of 250 stores, many market watchers have declared Blu-ray the winner of the high definition video format wars. However, the HD DVD camp is far from admitting defeat and they claim to have some good reasons. But do they?
