Steve Jobs had his fair share of doubters when he announced that Apple was getting into the movie downloads business. Many thought that Apple would struggle to get the interest of any studios other than Disney. However, once again Jobs is making his detractors eat dirt.

Hands up all PC users who have a wireless mouse and keyboard? If you're like me, you've had your input devices untethered for at least a couple of years. I've just burned a Kubuntu installation disc and it won't recognize my wireless mouse or keyboard to enable me to install the system. Judging by the bulletin boards I've been reading, it may not recognize yours either. Sorry guys, that's not good enough for us mere mortals at the coalface.

When Microsoft launched the latest version of Windows Media Center at a consumer home electronics show a couple of years ago claiming that the PC would be the new lounge room entertainment hub it all sounded nice in theory. However, with the progressive release of new capabilities on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, not only is the living room PC dead but a very real threat to conventional TV and even the telephone is looming.

I have been dying to say goodbye to Microsoft Windows for a number of years. I am fed up with the unceasing number of bugs, inexplicable system freezes, persistent gaping flaws that hackers can drive a truck through and empty promises of improvements with each new release. I'm ready to give Linux another try but is Linux ready for me?

Apple has been forced to take the heat for the business practices of record companies in Europe after regulator the European Commission (EC) charged Apple with anti-competitive practices over the way iTunes operates in different EU countries. The EC has a problem with the way iTunes differentiates between residents of the various EU countries, while recognizing that problem has been imposed upon Apple by the record companies.

The bold move by EMI to make all of its music available online DRM free is a long overdue step in the right direction. However, why will consumers pay extra for something that should be theirs by right?

Yesterday Microsoft, masters of marketing hype, issued a stunning press announcement about impressive early Vista sales and most of us took the bait and were reeled in hook, line and sinker. However, there are a few astute Windows market watchers who were able to see through the hype and inform us that sales of Vista are actually slower than early XP sales in 2001. Then of course, there is the question of Office 2007 sales, which Microsoft has not mentioned.

It appears that Taiwanese rumour site Digitimes has once again dug a bit of a hole for itself by incorrectly pronouncing a four month delay in the release of new Mac OS Leopard. Jupiter Research analyst Michael Gartenberg says in his blog that Apple has confirmed to him that Leopard is ready to pounce in Spring - that's before June folks.

While there were no bone crushing queues at the Australian midnight launch of PlayStation 3 a couple of nights ago, Sony stills claims that it has sold AUD$25 million worth of product since launch, according to Aussie games site Gamespot. However, since 20,000 PS3 units were on pre-order according to Sony, it would appear that initial off the street sales could well have been pretty thin.

When the word got out last year that Apple was actually building the iPhone, most (although not all) of us believed it. However, should we believe the same sort of rumours that have surfaced lately about the so-called GPhone from Google?

It's hard to imagine a product rollout that has been botched as badly as that of the PS3. However, in spite of Sony's worst efforts and the consequential embarrassment it so richly deserves the company will still end up with a winner.

It seems that nearly every day lately we hear something about forces from the old media world coming up with an idea or a proposed alliance to curb the growing new media entertainment phenomenon known as YouTube. While some have accepted the inevitable and have jumped on the YouTube bandwagon, it appears obvious that others still don't get it.
