Since the joint announcement from Cisco and Apple agreeing to share the iPhone brand, there has been much speculation as to what deal has been done under the table. Some analysts speculate that Cisco forced Apple to pay a settlement. However, a company with a market cap of US$165 billion would be more interested in longer term benefits than up front cash. Why did Cisco let Apple off the hook? One word: resale!

Global media giant Viacom has taken its fight with Google into its own hands by forging an alliance with Joost, the new online peer-to-peer video distribution brainchild of Kazaa and Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis. But it's a risky strategy that may backfire.

While many liken YouTube and MySpace as being sort of brothers in arms, birds of a feather bringing free content to the masses, there is a stark difference. One is owned by a large old media player and the other is owned by the world's biggest new media company. This difference is highlighted in the approach of both sites to protecting the copyright of content providers and defines a looming war over the distribution over the Internet.

Commander Communications Limited (ASX:CDR) has announced half year revenues of $506 million, up 59% on the $319 million of the previous corresponding half and predicts $1.1 - $1.2 billion in revenue for the full year. If the company achieves that result, Commander will have achieved a major milestone for an Australian based ICT company.

Russian school principal Alexander Ponosov can count himself lucky to escape the wrath of an overly zealous Russian prosecutor hell bent on proving to the world that his country is not soft on software piracy. Mr Ponosov, who was charged with using pirated Microsoft software, can thank supporters in high places such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Russian president Vladimir, as well as the Russian public for rallying to his cause.

In an open letter that has raised eyebrows sky high, Fred Amoroso the CEO of digital rights management solutions provider Macrovision has not only defended DRM but also asked Apple CEO Steve Jobs to hand over management of Apple's FairPlay DRM to Macrovision. So how does Mr Amoroso believe Apple and the public would benefit?

However, the latest ruling in a Texas court case absolving MySpace of the blame for an alleged sexual assault on a 13 year old girl by a 19 year old stranger she met online highlights a critical issue, personal responsibility.

At first the media were crowing that there were no Vista flaws to be patched. Then it was oops there was in fact one critical bug, although it was actually part of the Windows Defender security software. The real issue is, however, is that there WAS a vulnerability in Vista and there will be more.
