The new Asus Linux sub-notebook, the Eee PC, hits Australian shores in December, sporting a 7 inch screen and 4G flash RAM drive. The Eee PC, lightweight in both power and mass, is aimed squarely at the lifestyle entry level market and is not suitable for anyone wanting to do serious work. However, at $499 is Asus asking too much for too little?

It's hard to believe that Dell is serious about its well-publicised program to put Linux computers on the global market when there are blatantly obvious instances where the limited range of Ubuntu notebooks and desktops are more expensive than their Windows equivalent. However, is pricing as important as some may think?

An IDC report on new x86 server shipments in the US has created waves of joy at Redmond and howls of protest in open source circles. According to IDC, Windows is now growing its server market share at the expense of Linux, which has picked all the low hanging Unix fruit.

The word from Microsoft is that the company is devoting "non trivial" resources to develop a version of Windows XP that will run on the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project's XO computer. Is Microsoft really seeking third world domination at any cost? can OLPC resist the dollar temptations Microsoft is sure to throw its way?

There we were thinking that Adobe was at fault because its Acrobat reader had a vulnerability that exposed users to bad PDF files filled with malwares sent in spam when all along it was yet another vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. Microsoft has belatedly admitted that it's to blame and is working on a fix but for many it may be too late as spam with dodgy PDF files is hitting mailboxes by tens of thousands.

With both MySpace and YouTube off the market, the hottest property on the Web right now is social networking site Facebook, said to be valued at a massive US$15 billion by suitors such as Microsoft and Google. The latest liaison for the site with 50 million fresh faces on its books is with RIM, purveyor of the Blackberry, the smartphone of choice for business professionals.

I have absolutely no idea whether the story over on Smarthouse about the development of a new Xbox incorporating an HD DVD drive is true or just wistful musing on the part of a Singaporean Toshiba executive. However, if HD DVD is to have any chance of winning the format war, then the idea is a project whose time is long overdue.
