Intercepting cellphone calls really is child's play

Since my earlier comments  on reports that mobile phones can be compromised and calls intercepted, simply by sending an SMS that contains reprogramming instructions, the originator of the technique has responded to the questions I raised.

 
First serious threat to cellphone security? - no it's not

German security company, SecurStar, claims to have uncovered the first serious threat to the security of cellphone conversations, but the reality is that these compromised long ago. (Note a folllow on item in which SecurStar has responded to issues raised is available here .
 
Sprint to offer Microsoft Live Search on cellphones

Microsoft and Sprint have formed a strategic alliance to develop and deliver a range of new services for Sprint's business and consumer mobile customers, starting with the introduction of Windows Live Search on their cellphones to search location-based content from the Internet, but this is just the beginning.

You have to admire the chutzpah of Cingular Wireless giving its new Windows 5.0 based 'prosumer' PDA a name not dissimilar to that of Research in Motion whose recently launched  BlackBerry Pearl device it is squarely positioned against.

 
Boost Mobile launches 'first-of-a-kind' cellphone friend finder

Boost Mobile and loopt in the US have launched a cellphone based social networking service that enables users to plot the location of their friends on a map on their cellphone. Optus launched a similar service  in Australia a few months ago, but this one takes the functionality to a whole new level.

Microsoft has enhanced Live Search with a new service, Virtual Earth giving searchers the option to display search results as two-dimensional views or three dimensional models. However another technology Microsoft debuted earlier this year gives it the potential to create three dimensional images of any location from user-submitted photographs.

You may have heard of a new gimmick, aimed at teenagers: a downloadable ringtone for their cellphone that is of such a high pitch that the older ears of parents, teachers and other such undesirables can't hear it. The ringtone is free but it comes with some rather unpleasant baggage.

ACCC's Groundhog day over broadband advertising concerns

ACCC boss, Graeme Samuel, has been getting a good deal of coverage this week for his stern words to ISPs about misrepresenting the speeds of their broadband services. But he has saying exactly the same thing over two years ago. Surely it's time for less talk and more action.
