Google has agreed to purchase Panoramio, a community photo website based in Spain.

Like other photo sites, Panoramio lets users store and organise their photographs, but its distinctive feature is that it enables geo-location of those photos and allows them to be viewed in Google Earth and Google Maps - so the synergy is obvious.

"We've been working with Panoramio for some time - its photos have been a default layer in Google Earth since the beginning of the year," said John Hanke, Google's director for Maps, Earth and Local. "This layer will remain in place as our teams work together toward further integrating this amazing content, generated by many, into our mapping technologies."

Panoramio co-founder Eduardo Manchón said "We are very (and we mean very) happy to announce that Panoramio will be acquired by Google."

"We have tightened our relationship with Google Earth more and more in recent months, and at the end we decided to walk one step further. After so much work together, honestly, we couldn’t imagine a better scenario than selling Panoramio to Google," he added. "Most people upload their photos to Panoramio to share them through Google Earth, and it’s way cool to see Panoramio’s photos in Google Earth, so the upcoming acquisition reaffirms the current win-win situation."

Panoramio went from conception to acquisition in around 18 months.

Existing Panoramio users have to opportunity to opt out of the transfer of their images and data to Google when the transaction is completed.
