Page 2 of 3 Then there’s included memory. The O2 Atom Life, a 3.5G HSDPA capable Windows Mobile 5, with surely WM6 Professional on the way, came with the dreaded 2 megapixel camera, but happily, came with 1GB of flash memory built within, with the option of adding more through microSD cards to a maximum size of 2GB. Since then, most phones haven’t bothered offering any reasonable kind of on board memory, and only rely on a microSD slot able to accept cards no larger than 2GB in size. The thing is that the SDHC standard has been developed, standing for Secure Digital High Capacity, with this new standard allowing SD cards to reach what will be a maximum of 32GB of RAM, after which they’ll need to invent SDHC II or whatever they’ll call it for even larger capacities of flash memory. The latest digital cameras come with an SDHC card socket, compatible with the older 2GB and smaller SD cards, while also being compatible with the latest larger SDHC sizes, for more photos or video recordings at a higher quality. Samsung has just released a 8GB microSDHD card, perfect for cell phones, but as no cell phone comes with the appropriate slot just yet and an 8GB microSD HC card is mega expensive, it’s clearly a technology coming in the next round of new phones - but by the end of 2008, 8GB will be the new 1GB, with the newest phones offering 32GB, 64GB and more of storage. It’s taken Apple to release phones with 4GB of 8GB of flash memory, something Nokia would have done had hard drives not been the much cheaper option at the time, but at least companies like Nokia and others often give you a memory card slot that lets you keep on taking a few extra photos or keep on recording for that much longer if you’ve got a spare card on you, something that’s easy to organize especially if you know you’re going to have a long day. Apple could easily add in a microSDHD card socket, letting you instantly add a new 8GB microSDHD card if desired. Why not? Most other smartphones offer an extra memory slot, so it’s clearly not that hard. Apple just needs to want to offer this feature to consumers, but sadly the first iPhone isn’t coming with any memory expansion capabilities, so we can only hope future models will gain such an additional feature. Phones like the N95 make taking lots of photos is practical, as is taking video or recording audio, as is listening to music, whenever you want. Even watching the latest YouTube clips on-the-go when you’ve got time is a breeze with the N95, if you’re into YouTube it’s a killer feature. If your iPod is full at 4GB or 8GB because you’ve got too much music, or have taken too many photos or whatever you’ve done, you can’t just add in a fresh 1GB or 2GB card and keep on going, you need to go back home, transfer data onto your PC and get the space back that way. Maybe if the iPhone had iTunes on it, and could wirelessly transfer data to and from the iPhone to your home PC, when connected to wireless so it’s quick and doesn’t cost the Earth in data access fees – but Apple has said wireless synching is not one of the available features, even when you’re in your own home, connected to the same wireless router as the PC, let along being connected wirelessly from a different city. It’s a shame, as the PSP is able easily wirelessly stream music, videos, TV shows, photos and movies from the PS3 when in range of a Wi-Fi access point you can successfully connect to, and there’s no reason why data couldn’t be first copied from the PSP to the PS3, and when successfully verified as copied on the other end, wiped from the PSP’s Memory Stick if so desired. Still, given the iPhone is meant to be a handheld iComputer as well as phone and mp3 player and everything else, there’s no reason why a future software upgrade couldn’t easily offer this functionality if Apple and Steve Jobs so desired. So, what about better sound quality? What about the keyboard? What about 3.5G and WiMAX? What about battery life? And what's coming next? Please read onto page 3 for the conclusion now! |
