Apple goes on a Mac and Windows Safari! PDF Print E-mail

Safari 3 is now available as a public beta for both the Mac and the Windows platform, compatible with XP and Vista, and promising speeds twice as fast as IE7!

Apple’s own browser, Safari, now in version 3.0 and available as a free download, now runs on Windows, the Mac OS and iPhone, competing with Internet Explorer and Firefox. Steve Jobs said he wanted to boost Safari’s 4.9% share to something much larger, and promises that Safari renders pages twice as fast as IE7 and 1.6 times faster than Firefox.

We’ve already downloaded it and are happily using it in Windows Vista. Safari looks just like it does on the Mac, just as iTunes brings the Mac look-and-feel to the Windows environment.

Promising full support of open Internet standard, Safari 3 offers “easy-to-manage bookmarks, effortless browsing with easy-to-organize tabs and a built-in RSS reader to quickly scan the latest news and information”. Apple also says that Safari includes SnapBack, one-click access to an initial search query, resizable text fields and “private browsing to ensure that information about an individual’s browsing history isn’t stored”.

Jobs said during his WWDC keynote that: “We think Windows users are going to be really impressed when they see how fast and intuitive web browsing can be with Safari. Hundreds of millions of Windows users already use iTunes, and we look forward to turning them on to Safari’s superior browsing experience too.”

Apple says that Safari 3 “supports all modern Internet standards so users can view websites as they were meant to be seen, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SVG and Java”.

We also tried YouTube and the Flash video clips it offers work seamlessly, and other sites we’ve tried all seem to be rendering properly, giving Safari a real chance at making an impact on both the user figures of IE7 and Firefox.

However given the newness of Safari, being available for download for less than an hour, it's not surprising to see that Roboform doesn't yet support the Safari interface, although we're sure they, and other plug-in developers, will now be furiously working on new versions to support Safari on Windows.

So, we now have three browsers on our computer, and while we won’t be giving up on IE7 or Firefox anytime soon, it’s nice to have a new alternative, and one from Apple to boot!

Apple also launched the latest ‘near-final’ beta of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, announced that the iPhone will allow developers to create Web 2.0 apps that can make phone calls, bring up Google Maps and send an email, and a server version of OS X 10.5 is also on the way, too. More details on these last three developments to come shortly at iTWire.
