Skype has released its second update in a month to Skype 2.6, which had been out in beta since April when it was released in mid May.

On May 17 Skype introduced version 2.6 (2.6.0.137) of its Mac software, bragging that it was the first time a major feature had made its debut on the Mac rather than the Windows version.

A week later, on 23 May, it released version 2.6.0.140 with a list of bug fixes: an update for USB/Bluetooth audio, localsation fixes; changing the menu item 'Rename...' to 'Edit Contact...' for SkypeOut contacts; fixing deleting header files from Skype framework and fixing a bug which caused a crash after forced upgrade.

Skype has given no indication of what bug fixes are incorporated in the latest version (2.6.0.148). However one commentator on the VersionTracker website, who appeared well-informed, wrote: "This version has updated audio engine and we are highly recommending for everyone to upgrade. Audio changes include: Skype's own audio codec Skype improved conference mixer, Skype Jitter Buffer and concealment, Skype audio preprocessing components.

"Other changes in newly released version 2.6.0.148 are: localisations, all updated; bugfix, fixed application hangup on handling certain URL links in chat messages; bugfix, fixed exception (resulting in disappearance of message) on handling certain intentionally constructed 'bad' chat messages; bugfix, privacy policy fix, not accepting multichats from non-authorised users."

With such significant improvements, one wonders why Skype itself is being so low-key about this latest release.{moscomment}
