Already, reviewers worldwide are largely giving the browser a massive thumbs up, as it gives people a browsing on experience on small-screen phones one that is much more like you’re used to seeing on your everyday computer. Most phones that don’t have a touch screen, or one as good as Apple’s, so Opera offers you an onscreen mouse which is moved by your phone’s navigation keys. Actually, a box is attached to the mouse when viewing the overview or shrunken version of any web page, so you just need to move the box to the area you want to zoom into, press your phone’s main ‘go’ button and instantly the text or photo is zoomed to match your screen size, with the text properly formatted to fit whatever size screen your phone is adorned with. Web sites you want to view need to pass through Opera’s proxy first, allowing Opera to compress images on the site so they load faster on your phone’s screen, but at times page loading seemed a bit slow, despite Opera saying the browser is twice as fast as any other mobile browser. That said, it’s still a beta, with Opera’s proxy servers likely handling a massive amount of traffic right now as word spreads that Opera’s new browser rocks and makes browsing on a small screen phone a much more pleasurable experience. The zooming action works very smoothly and is reminiscent of the zooming seen when browsing the web on your TV with Opera using the Nintendo Wii games console. Just as with Nintendo’s version of Opera, the mobile version that is Opera Mini does not support tabbed browsing. The current version of Opera Mini 3.1 is free to download, so it’s more than likely that Opera Mini 4 will also remain free to download once the final version is released. Opera say that Version 4 is a complete redesign, and can be downloaded now for free from their site. Jon von Tetzchner, the CEO of Opera said in Opera’s press release that: "We are excited to share the beta with the fast-growing community of Opera Mini users. The feedback from the beta users will go to make Opera Mini even better and we thank the community for their efforts. Opera Mini has succeeded only due to the support of the people who have made it the most popular mobile browser available today." In the same statement, Yahoo’s director of mobile products, Lee Ott, said that: “As the first mobile browser to gain mass popularity, Opera Mini has proven people want access to all their favorite Internet services and sites on their mobile phone. As Opera's exclusive mobile search partner, our revolutionary Yahoo! oneSearch service gives their millions of consumers worldwide access to the better search results and instant answers they want on their mobile phone.”
Opera have also posted a humorous video poking fun at Apple and comparing the free nature of this latest Opera Mini browser for almost any phone compared with the much more expensive iPhone with the same music Apple use in their PC vs Mac TV ads.
