Apple and AT&T have announced the range of pricing iPhone users can pay for, including unlimited data, a good number of minutes, visual voicemail and more but only 200 SMS text messages.

The iPhone service plans have been announced at last, letting potential iPhone users know the ongoing costs of owning an iPhone, starting at US $59.99 per month.

All three iPhone plans include ‘unlimited data’ over AT&T’s EDGE network for email and web browsing, visual voicemail letting users hear voicemail messages in whatever order they choose, unlimited ‘mobile-to-mobile’ calling, ‘roll-over’ minutes, the addition of unlimited night-time and weekend minutes on the two more expensive plans and 200 SMS text messages.

The three plans are US $59.99 for 450 minutes, US $79.99 for 900 minutes and US $99.99 for 1,350 minutes.

AT&T plans to charge a one-time activation fee of $36, and have also promised that “family plans” are available, without giving any additional detail of what savings that might entail. As previously known, these prices are for a two year contract for an iPhone that costs US $499 for a 4GB model and US $599 for an 8GB model.

It has been reported that the iPhone will be available on AT&T’s regular plans as well, and while it hasn’t been specified in Apple and AT&T’s release, it has been reported by existing AT&T customers that extra ‘packs’ are available to purchase more blocks of SMS text messages if required, leading to the likelihood that similar deals will be available for iPhone users.

Steve Jobs said in Apple’s release that “We want to make choosing a service plan simple and easy, so every plan includes unlimited data with direct Internet access, along with Visual Voicemail and a host of other goodies. We think these three plans give customers the flexibility to experience all of iPhone’s revolutionary features at affordable and competitive prices”.

Randall Stephenson, chairman and CEO, AT&T took the opportunity in the same release to trumpet AT&T’s advantages, saying that:”AT&T has the largest voice and data network in America, the largest mobile-to-mobile calling community and the fewest dropped calls. AT&T has invested more than 16 billion dollars in its wireless network between 2005 and 2007, and iPhone customers will enjoy the best voice and data network in the nation”.

Apple has also introduced a very cool way to activate the iPhone - using iTunes! Please read onto page 2 for the details, and the conclusion!
