Bid chairman Mark Lloyd said "Australia is a major ICT hub in South East Asia and a convenient, affordable and safe location for our many neighbours. An Australian 2010 Congress presents a golden opportunity for IFIP to work closer with this part of the world. We were delighted that the South East Asia Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC) showed its support by endorsing Australia and our ACS bid." ACS president Philip Argy talked up the suitability as a location for the congress: "Brisbane is an ideal host city as it is the nation's premier tourist gateway and the headquarters for many major corporations in South East Asia, including SAP, Boeing and Virgin." Without questioning Brisbane's attractiveness and capability for hosting major conferences, it must be said that you'll find many more corporate headquarters further south in Sydney and Melbourne. Still, the Queensland Government's support, including a $A150,000 pledge, may help explain Argy's enthusiasm. The ACS has approached Prime Minister John Howard to seek matching funding. (For the benefit of readers outside Australia, the Queensland and Federal Governments are of different political persuasions.)
