Russian cosmonaut Yury Malenchenko, NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, and Malaysian space flight participant Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor were successfully launched on their Expedition 16 mission to the space station.

They launched at 9:22 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on October 10, 2007, from the Russian Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The three space travelers, who reached space through their Soyuz FG launch vehicle, are part of the Expedition 16 crew assigned to the International Space Station.

After entering orbit about the Earth, they will perform a series of maneuvers so they can dock to the Russian's Zarya module on Friday, October 12, at  about 10:52 a.m. EDT.
