A new system update for Nintendo's Wii delivers support for USB keyboards and improvements to the Internet Channel.

Keyboard support is most useful when using the Message Board or the Internet Channel.

There are no particular requirements for keyboard compatibility: "we do not currently have a list of compatible USB keyboards; however, most brands are likely to be compatible," said Nintendo officials.

Changes to the Opera browser that powers the Internet Channel include USB keyboard support, the ability to edit the current URL (especially useful when you''re not using a physical keyboard), the use of the Wii Remote's B button as a shift key when using the onscreen keyboard, and the ability to search for the word currently selected with the Remote.

The limit on the number of favorites has been raised from 48 to 56, and they can be sent to friends via WiiConnect24. The new browser also delivers stability, speed and security enhancements.

Opera widgets - free mini-programs that run in the browser for entertainment and information - are supported by the updated Internet Channel.

The Internet Channel update is free to existing users; initial access to the channel costs 500 Wii points.
