The following media release gives some insight into the calibre of entrants in this, the 25th anniversary of the ATOM awards. Multi-award winning film, ‘Thursday’s Fictions’ is not only amongst the strong contenders for an ATOM in the ‘Best Experimental’ category at this year’s EnhanceTV ATOM Awards, it is also making a significant mark as one of the most popular sites of its kind in Second Life. Created by Dr Richard James Allen and his partner at The Physical TV Company, Dr Karen Pearlman, ‘Thursday’s Fictions’ tells the story of a woman named ‘Thursday’ who finds out she is going to be reincarnated as ‘Tuesday’. Her attempt to cheat the cycle of reincarnation unleashes a terrible beauty that leaves the other ‘days of the week’ in turmoil. The film has been described as, “a sweeping and sensual cinematic experience of music, dance and surreal fantasy - a shining example of putting the art back in art house.” (Gold Medal Award Citation, Director’s Choice for Artistic Excellence, Park City Film Music Festival.). One of the things that makes ‘Thursday’s Fictions’ such a unique production is that it is based on an idea about reincarnation which has itself had a number of incarnations. ‘Thursday’s Fictions’ began as a large scale stage production with dancers and actors and elaborate sets and costumes, was then published as a book which was nominated for the Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry and from there evolved into the multi-award-winning film which is now in the running for a 2007 EnhanceTV ATOM Award. Dr Richard James Allen won a ‘Best Experimental Production’ ATOM Awards in 2002 for his film No Surrender and says of this year’s nomination, “I am thrilled to be nominated again. What excites me about the Atom Awards is that the Australia Teachers of Media is an organisation that seems to value both the history of media and its future. A nomination from ATOM seems very thoughtful and informed, driven by artistic concerns.” The production has been screened internationally at numerous festivals in addition to being been in Australia on the ABC. For more information on Thursday’s Fictions, including access to its 3D online presence in Second Life, visit www.thursdaysfictions.com Amber Nelson, Event Manager, 2007EnhanceTV ATOM Awards said of the awards program, “It is always so exciting to see the broad range of impressive productions that are in the running for an award each year. It’s also fabulous to see a production like ‘Thursday’s Fictions’ which has been creating a presence in other forms of media including written word and now a great site in Second Life. It’s wonderful to see that sort of extension of a concept and the utilisation of so many different avenues.” The 2007 EnhanceTV ATOM Awards will be presented at a gala presentation event, held in the Plaza Ballroom, Regent Theatre, Melbourne on Friday 19 October, 2007. The program is open to the education and industry sectors, students, production companies, independent filmmakers, educational bodies and educational producers in both countries. The 2007EnhanceTV ATOM Awards program is sponsored by EnhanceTV, Adobe Asia Pacific, Victorian Government – Department for Victorian Communities, Avid Australia, Monash University, Deakin University, Encore Magazine, Metro Magazine, Screen Education Magazine, Metroscreen, Crumpler, Qpix, Madman Entertainment and Open Channel.
