In the U.S the all important NPD sales figures have been released; Microsoft’s Xbox 360, on the back of a Halo 3 effect has pipped the Nintendo Wii for September.

September has proven lucrative for most associated with the North American games industry.

Revenues for the industry rocketed in September with retailers in the US shifting US$1.36 billion in console game software, hardware and accessories, 74 percent up on last year.

When narrowed to hardware alone, console gaming is up 188 percent over the previous September.

Halo 3 would seem to indeed be a console mover as the Xbox 360 topped these hardware sales for the month; 528,000 units going into U.S homes.

Though the Wii and Sony PS3 lagged behind the Halo 3/Xbox 360 charge, there are positive statements for both these consoles coming out of the September figures.

The Nintendo Wii sold 476,000 units in November 2006, the month of its launch.  The 501,000 units sold during September 2007 represent the consoles biggest month of sales ever in the U.S

Meanwhile, over the Sony camp, though bringing up the rear for September, there will be quiet confidence that a now that a model and price range have been settled on from November forwards, that the PS3 will begin to power up the sales charts into and through the up-coming holiday season.  Given the success of the new 40GB model in other regions, this confidence may (finally) be justified.
