Mail is a desktop mail application that can aggregate Hotmail and other inboxes. The bundle also includes an updated version of Messenger that handles voice and video calling as well as instant messaging. On the sharing side, the additions are Events (calendaring), and Photo Gallery for publishing photos and videos to Spaces. Also new is Windows Live Writer, desktop software to simplify content creation for Spaces. OneCare Family Safety logs and controls access to web sites, blocks inappropriate search results, and allows parents to approve or disapprove their children's Hotmail, Messenger and Spaces contacts. "With over 400 million customers using the service today, we have a real opportunity to help consumers connect their online experiences, devices and networks in new and powerful ways," said Chris Jones, corporate vice president of Windows Live experience program management at Microsoft. "This new generation of Windows Live brings great enhancements to popular services like Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Spaces while introducing new, fun experiences with digital photos, planning and sharing events, publishing to the Web, and keeping in touch with friends that we think our customers will really enjoy." Changes since the service entered beta test in June include increased Hotmail storage and user interface improvements. "Each service in Windows Live has been tweaked and optimised, which makes us excited about today’s release," said Jones. Windows Live provide a degree of interoperability with other online services, such as publishing photos from Photo Gallery to Flickr. If all this is free to users, where's the money coming from? According to Jones, "this new generation of Windows Live is going to bring great opportunities for advertisers by offering a suite of social media services that allows them to connect with their target audience where they plan, live and share throughout the day."
