The acquisition of Network General by NetScout has been finalised.

Best known for its Sniffer brand, Network General started as an independent company, merged with McAfee to form Network Associates, and then was spun off again earlier this year. Sniffer is a family of packet inspection and analysis tools.

NetScout's nGenius range of products provide performance management capabilities, so the two companies are clearly complementary.

"On their own, NetScout's nGenius and Network General's Sniffer brands were trusted names in the data center and substantial forces in the industry," said Michael Szabados, chief operating officer at NetScout.

"Throwing our combined weight at tomorrow's most difficult network management challenges, we will elevate and advance the state of the art in packet-flow performance management solutions to the benefit of our customers and the networking industry as a whole."

The $200 million-plus transaction involved a mix of shares, debt and cash.
