Our story yesterday that Dell may be dropping its pre-installed Ubuntu program has been vehemently denied by Dell officials who have assured us and the source of the original story in The Inquirer that it's still full steam ahead for Linux at the company.

Apparently the problem with users not being able to get hold of Ubuntu Inspiron desktop and notebook computers in Europe, according to Dell's EMEA PR, was merely a temporary supply and demand problem and a case of a broken link on a website and Ubuntu computers are available now.

Dell has published an up to date refutation of The Inquirer story and an on the record confirmation of its continued Ubuntu commitment on its Direct2Dell blog.

In addition, Dell's PR in Australia, emailed me in response to my remark that my efforts to obtain a review Ubuntu box have met a dead end saying that the lack of availability of a review machine in Australia is simply a case of Dell not selling Ubuntu systems in Australia yet.

"Sorry that you feel re-buffed, we haven’t given you a unit for review because we’re not currently offering the systems here -- no-one has else has seen one here either -- if that changes you’ll be first on my list."

First on Dell Australia's list? We'll hold you to that Dell. But please remind headquarters that many Australians would also like the option to choose Linux on Dell - and soon.
