Page 4 of 4 AdSenseLet’s see what Google can do for us; in a new browser window go to Google’s AdSense page. Sign up, or if you already have an account with Google, log in. Re-open your web site’s WordPress dashboard and return to the plugins page. If you have it open already, hit your browser’s refresh button. You’ll now see AdSense-Manager listed. Click Activate. However, even though WordPress says it is active, it doesn’t do anything yet. Click the Options tab heading across the dashboard’s main menu. Click the AdSense Manager tab. You will be prompted for your Google AdSense ID. Enter this and click Save changes, then click Manage Ads to set up your AdSense advertising blocks. This plugin will show you a list of blocks already set up; by default there is one demo block. Click Edit next to it to change it. Give it a new name, which is purely for descriptive purposes to yourself and is not displayed anywhere on the live site. You can adjust any of the display settings, and also the type of ads shown and the size of the block. A preview will be shown on screen reflecting any colour changes you make. Finally, click Save changes when you are ready. Now you have made an ad, you have to insert it into your site’s theme so it shows up on all pages. Click the Presentation tab, then Theme Editor. Choose an appropriate file from the right-hand pane: if you wish the ads to be displayed at the bottom of your page, click the Footer file. Or, if you want them in the sidebar, click the Sidebar file and so on. You will be presented with the actual underlying PHP code for that template file. Find an appropriate location in the file and add the code <?php adsensem_ad('name'); ?> replacing “name” with the name you gave your advertisement block just a minute ago. Click Update File to save your changes. View your site again and you will now find Google ads presented, at the location where you specified in the template file you edited. If you’re not happy with the placement, go back and re-edit the template files. If you’re not happy with the appearance or style of the ads, go back into the AdSense-Manager options. Better page links There’s so much we could go on to say about getting a WordPress site set up, but let’s leave it with one more. In your dashboard again click Options, then Permalink. Here you can modify the type of links WordPress makes for you. The default is functional but you might get better search engine results if you choose a different style. Make a change, then click Update Permalink Structure. So that’s it! If you’ve followed all this you’re up-and-running with a commercial quality professional web site. It looks great, it is unique, it has high bandwidth and availability and thanks to the power of open source you’ve spent just chump change on the domain name and nothing since. Happy webmastering!
