A UK search portal, MagicTaxi, is offering to donate half of all advertising revenue and commissions it receives from online purchasing to a trust that plants trees.
According to MagicTaxi: "You get great results from leading search partners such as Yahoo!, Kelkoo and Wikipedia and the online prices you pay with the participating retailers are the same great online prices! - Just a little more Magical as a proportion will be used to create more lush woodland habitat throughout the UK." However one very popular search engine conspicuous by its absence is Google.

The new service, at www.magictaxi.co.uk , is a variant on MagicTaxi's existing search service at www.magictaxi.com where 50 percent of gross revenue is donated to charities. According to the site, "A different one of our charitable partners appears on our homepage each day. For the 24 hour period that a charity is featured, whenever you search, the charity receives 50 percent of the gross revenue MagicTaxi receives from its advertising partners."

Alternatively, users who want to support a specific charity or charities can opt to search via a home page specific to each charity.

The new service reflects a growing trend, already apparent in Australia. ISP iPrimus in October 2007 launched a 'Green Broadband' program in conjunction with Landcare Australia under which Landcare will plant, on average, five native trees per year of service for each customer.

iPrimus CEO Ravi Bhatia, said: "iPrimus and Landcare have developed a conservative mathematical model and estimate that planting of five native trees will more than neutralise the effect of greenhouse emissions resulting from a typical family's broadband usage over the course of a year." iPrimus estimates the program could result in up to one million trees being planted over the next four years.

In September 2007 mobile phone service provider, M2 Telecommunications, launched Green Mobiles, billed as "Australia's first environmental mobile telecommunications service, specifically targeting climate change caused by global warming." Green Mobiles contributes ten cents in every dollar of customer revenue to Australian Greenhouse Office accredited carbon abatement programs via the Australian Climate Exchange, www.climateexchange.com.au. {moscomment}
