A lighter and slimmer sibling for Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro models has been tipped by rumour sites for some time, and it now seems increasingly likely that its debut will be Steve Jobs' keynote at Macworld Expo in January. The move from fluorescent to LED backlighting eliminates mercury from the display assembly, a change welcomed by environmentalists. It also reduces the power consumption, something that appeals to mobile users as well as those concerned with green issues. Other benefits include more even illumination and the opportunity to make slimmer devices. Apple already uses LED backlights in MacBook Pro models. The expectation is that the new model will be positioned somewhere between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.
