The initial notebook range will include the XPS M1330, Inspiron 1521 and Inspiron 1420, all in a limited range of colours. The desktop roster will include the XPS One plus the Inspiron 530, 531, and 531s. Additional models and colour choices will be added over time. Service and support will be provided by Dell. "Dell is clearly one of the most popular and successful PC companies and their addition to our retail and online selection gives Best Buy customers unprecedented choice when buying a computer," said Dave Morrish, senior vice president of Best Buy's mobility business unit. Dell has realised that while some buyers know what they want and are prepared to buy online or over the phone, others want to see what they are getting. "Seeing the latest fashion colors of our Inspiron and XPS notebooks or previewing the ultimate gaming experience on a high-performance system can be an important part of how people shop," said Dell vice president of sales and marketing Michael Tatelman. The company previously announced similar arrangements with Wal-Mart (US, Canada, Brazil and Mexico), Staples (US), Carrefour (Europe), Carphone Warehouse (UK), Courts (Singapore), Gome (China), and Bic Camera (Japan). The addition of Best Buy means Dell PCs will be available in nearly 10,000 stores. While Apple's company-owned stores have proved successful, Dell seems to be mindful of other PC vendors' negative experiences. Gateway for example, closed its 188 retail stores in 2004, and now sells through a variety of retailers including Best Buy, Circuit City and Costco, as well as online and by phone.
