LG’s second-gen Blu-ray/HD DVD player better, still slow PDF Print E-mail

Ever since LG and Samsung started talking about dual format Blu-ray/HD DVD players, some thought the next-gen format war would soon be over, but while LG’s newest dual format player is certainly an improvement, it’s still slow – and far too expensive.

When LG launched their first Blu-ray/HD DVD combo player at CES earlier this year, the BH100, there was some excitement that perhaps the format war would be over sooner rather than later, but some missing HD DVD features, slow operation and a high price stalled that idea.

Now that LG have launched their second generation combo player, the BH200, things have improved somewhat, according to PC World, now featuring full compatibility with both discs’ interactive features, and a lower price, but the slowness of the system remains at every point, something that is certainly odd when you think that we’re in 2007 – slow load times are surely something that belong in the 1980s or 1990s, and not in the 21st century.

The player is even compatible with the Blu-ray Profile 1.1, an update to the Blu-ray standard that properly implements ‘picture-in-picture’ functionality, matching a feature that HD DVD has had since launch, allowing video commentary of movies and other interactive features instead of just a voice commentary track.

LG also says that the BD Live format will be supported through a firmware update, ensuring their player stays up to date with the latest standards and doesn’t become obsolete from the first day of sale, although most HD DVD and Blu-ray players are also easily firmware upgradeable too.

Sadly the biggest thing against LG’s BH200 is the cost – US $999. This compares with the recent Wal-mart US $99 HD DVD player special, along with Blu-ray players starting at US $350. Even with a more expensive HD DVD player, the combined price is still seriously cheaper than LG’s alternative.

However the LG has the benefit of being one machine, instead of two, and LG is counting on that convenience factor being something that will sway consumers towards the BH200.

So, what about Samsung's dual format player that's due later this month - how will it challenge LG's new BH200? Please read onto page 2 for the conclusion...
