The Twenty20 clash between Australia and India is set to be broadcast in high definition from the Melbourne Cricket Ground on February 1.

Believed to be an Australian first, cricket fans will enjoy the international Twenty20 match at the MCG in 1080i high definition on Australia's Nine Network.

The move comes as Australia's three commercial television networks ramp up their high definition offerings. Seven was the first to begin HD multi-channelling in October, with its high definition channel (70) breaking synchronisation with the SD channel (7) for several hours each night to screen different programs. The change was made without warning the public, to the frustration of many high definition viewers .

As of December, Ten is offering 50 hours of programming per week on its HD channel that viewers won't see on the main SD channel - including sport, entertainment, films, documentaries and sci-fi. It is also screening 11 hours of time-shifted programming per week, including Ten's 5pm News. Nine has been less forthcoming about its HD multi-channelling plans. The commercial networks are not permitted to multi-channel in SD until 2009.

With the Australia versus India Twenty20 match, sport continues to lead the way as Australia slow embraces high definition digital broadcasting. Ten plans to broadcast all of its AFL matches in HD in 2008, after only broadcasting the Saturday night games in 1080i HD this year. Seven also plans to broadcast the 2008 Beijing Olympics in 1080i HD.

Australia's city dwellers have only two years left to embrace digital television, with incoming Federal Communications minister Stephen Conroy recently signing analogue's death warrant in the big smoke for December 2009. Analogue transmissions will be phased out across the country over the following four years, with all regional transmissions to cease by 2013.{moscomment}
