Rumours are circulating that Apple Australia is preparing to open an Apple Store in the Chadstone shopping centre in suburban Melbourne.

The story originated with MacTalk, which claimed "Quotes from Apple and Chadstone management confirm the new store, planned to open in Feb 08, soon after the flagship store in Sydney."

MacTalk has posted several photos of the boarded-off location within the shopping centre, which carries the words "Apple opening soon".

However, Apple Australia public relations manager Fiona Martin told iTWire "MacTalk did not confirm anything with us."

Asked whether an Apple Store would be opening at Chadstone, Martin said "As you know we will be opening a retail store in Sydney soon but have no announcements regarding a store at that location."

That careful phrasing - consistent with Apple Australia's time-honoured 'neither confirm nor deny' stance - does leave open the possibility that the suggestion is founded in fact, but it certainly does not add any credence to the rumour.

Even if Apple had signed a lease at Chadstone, it would be most unlike the company to allow centre management to disclose the fact prior to making its own announcement, especially given the risk of distracting attention from the opening of Australia's first Apple Store in Sydney.

Chadstone is one of the largest shopping centres in metropolitan Melbourne, and expansion that is underway will make it the largest in Australia. It is located reasonably close to Melbourne's centre of population.

However, Apple reseller Computers Now already has a Chadstone store, so another explanation of the hoardings within the centre is that it is moving into larger premises.

An earlier rumour of a Melbourne Apple Store proved to be speculation on the part of the property developer, but coincidentally the site involved was just up the road from the Computers Now store on Chapel Street.
