Huawei and KPN have signed an MoU for Huawei to be the provider of KPN's UMTS core network equipment and for the two companies to work together to build a complete nationwide 3G/2G circuit switch/packet switch core network. Meanwhile, Ericsson announced that it had been selected as the sole supplier of the 3G radio access component of KPN's UMTS network, including HSDPA technology. Marco Visser, COO of KPN Mobile the Netherlands: "The main reason for selecting Ericsson is that they will provide us with the capability to launch HSDPA technology before the end of this year." According to Huawei, its equipment will simplify KPN's mobile network structure while reducing operation and maintenance costs for its mobile network. "Huawei's high-capacity mobile softswitch equipment can reduce network transmission costs, enabling fast deployment of new applications, and its...SGSN/GGSN equipment is well-suited for HSDPA's service traffic." Huawei claims to have won 24 UMTS commercial contracts globally.
