The Mambo content management system has been named "Best Open Source Software Solution" at the LinuxWorld Australia conference in Sydney, the third time Mambo software has won the award at a LinuxWorld event.

Mambo, the content management system which originally powered the iTWire website, was developed by Australian software company Miro, went open source in 1999 and was released under GPL (General Public License) in 2001. A dispute between the core development team and the project sponsor Miro resulted in the bulk of the core development team resigning in August 2005 and establishing a fork of the Mambo project called Joomla. The new project saw a large number of Mambo users move their sites to the Joomla content management system which is rapidly establishing a name for itself worldwide.

Joomla and forked code were not far from the minds of representatives of the new Mambo development team, as they accepted the award in Sydney.

Martin Brampton, the leader of the Mambo Core Development Team said "What with all the disruption and confusion created by the fork of our codeset last year, we're very pleased to see that industry professionals recognize that Mambo continues to set the standard within the Open Source world. This award comes just as we are about to release version 4.6 of the system and right on the eve of the five year anniversary of the release of Mambo under the GPL license. There are plenty of reasons for the Team and our users to celebrate."

The LinuxWorld event in Sydney was the first time this global Linux and Open Source trade show and conference has been held in Australia. The show ran three days at the Sydney Convention Center and was well-attended. Industry leaders Novell, IBM, Sun, RedHat and others were in attendance and displaying products. Mambo edged out the new Alfresco Content Management System to win the award.

Mambo was previously named "Best Open Source Software Solution" at LinuxWorld San Francisco and at LinuxWorld Boston in 2005. The software was also named "Best Total Industry Solution" at LinuxWorld Boston in 2005: Team Mambo will be attending the LinuxWorld Boston event the week of April 3, but the group is foreclosed from competing for awards at this years' event.
