Microsoft has released Vista Release Candidate 2, a new and what the company hopes is the final build before the commercial release of the operating system  to volume licensees in November.

The software will be available to a few hundred thousand users, including members of Microsoft's Customer Preview Program, developers and other testers.

According to Microsoft, it does not expect to find any significant problems to delay the final launch date for business users in November and general comsumer release in January 2007. However, the software company left the door open to push back those dates if quality issues arise.

The new release candidate, according to Microsoft, has been tightened with improvements to its user interface, performance and applications compatibility.

The debate is still raging between analysts as to whether next month will see the commercial release of Vista. Notably, Gartner at last report has not changed its prediction that Microsoft will not be able to make the November 2006 and January 2007 release schedules.

A major issue raised with previous builds to date has been the User Account Control (UAC) security feature, which prevents ordinary users who don't have administrator level privileges from accomplishing simple administrative tasks, such as deleting or installing an application or changing the system time. However, a number of testers say the security benefits of UAC far outweigh the annoyance factor for users.

An iTWire tester. who will be posting a review shortly, reports that Vista RC1 runs almost flawlessly.{moscomment}
