Microsoft has launched a robotics development toolkit, raising the intriguing if unlikely possibility of a Bill Gates robot being available at around the same time the company founder steps down from his job in 2008.

Microsoft's newly-released Robotics Studio includes a drag-and-drop programming environment to allow basic robot control for non-programmers and a 3D physics simulator for testing robot programming prior to deployment. Supported programming languages include Visual Basic, C# and IronPython.

Microsoft says the product, in development since 2004, is aimed at hobbyists, academics and commercial developers. Tinkerers can download and use the software for free, but commercial robots require individual licensing to use the package.

Among the companies supporting the platform is iRobot, whose Roomba self-guided vacuum cleaner is one of the few robotic products to have made it into domestic use.
