Visiting Sydney Harbour on Australia Day? Wear something distinctive (and keep your fingers crossed for clear skies) and you may be visible on Google Earth.

Google Australia has announced it will be taking low-level aerial photos of Sydney Harbour and its surrounds on Friday January 26 to celebrate Australia Day.

A map showing the area to be covered and the approximate time that the plane will be overhead various locations can be found here, along with a form you can use to request notification when the images go live on Google Maps.

A sample photo from a similar exercise in the Netherlands suggests that while the resolution isn't sufficient to be able to recognise individuals facing the camera, it should be quite easy to find yourself in the image if you knew roughly where you were when the plane flew over.{moscomment}
