The number of broadband connections in Australia has passed 3.6 million, although more than a third of broadband-enabled homes are only on 256 Kbps connections.

Another 2.75 million users are still using dial-up connections, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ September 2006 Internet Activity Survey.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) continued to be the dominant access technology used for non dial-up subscribers, accounting for almost 77 per cent of the total non dial-up subscribers in September 2006. Only 17 per cent of all broadband subscribers in September had download speeds of 1.5 Mbps or greater, up from 10 per cent in March 2005.

Wireless technology (mobile and fixed) also showed strong growth, accounting for 4.8 per cent of the non dial-up access.
